Call for Entries – 2010 Sunshine State Awards

SPJ’s South Florida Pro Chapter is pleased to announce the 16th annual Sunshine State Awards competition, open to all print, broadcast and online journalists in the State of Florida. All entries for the 2010 competition must be received (not postmarked) by 7 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2010.



Join Us for South Florida SPJ’s Coming Out Party

On Thursday, Jan. 28, we’re having a South Florida SPJ Coming Out party where you are invited to hear what we have in store for 2010. From 7-9 p.m. at the Porterhouse in Boca Raton, you’ll get to chow on some free food while hearing about all the great events we are putting on this year, from our upcoming Parachute Training in February to our Project Invictus in March to our annual Ethics Hold ‘Em in April, and that’s only to name a few.



2010 Board Update

This is an update on the results of SPJ South Florida Pro Chapter’s Nov. 19 board of directors election. As I informed all chapter members in my Nov. 25 note, several members and candidates who participated in the election raised questions about voting qualifications, related bylaws, and the necessary qualifications to hold seats on the board. By now many of you have heard about the controversy surrounding the last South Florida SPJ election. Michael Koretzky has resigned from the board in an effort to help move this matter toward a conclusion. Consistent with our bylaws, as Executive Vice President I will assume the position of President effective Jan. 1, 2010. Mike McQueen Honored

The South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has announced their new Michael Anthony McQueen scholarship fund. Julie Kay, president of the local chapter, announced the scholarship on November 7 at a memorial service held at Florida International University.

he SPJ South Florida’s Oct. 29 panel discussion, “Launching Your Own News Organization,” drew nearly 50 attendees interested in hearing veteran journalists talk about how they have become publishers. Due to widespread interest, the session was videotaped and has now been posted on YouTube.



In Memoriam: Mike McQueen

From Chapter President Julie Kay: It is my sad duty to announce that Mike McQueen, the former president of the South Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, passed away over the weekend. McQueen served as president of our chapter from 1999 to 2000. The entire South Florida journalism community will mourn Mike, a wonderful and kind man, as well as a top-notch journalist. We at SPJ have set up a scholarship in his honor.
