Will Lionel Messi start tonight? According to Yahoo Sports, Khel Now and Latestly, he is reportedly expected to start and play a significant role when Inter Miami hosts FC Cincinnati. The club has not confirmed it in an official statement since the weekend’s loss to the New York Red Bulls, so treat it as strong buzz, not a lock.
One quick reset before kickoff: this is not a playoff game. The 2026 MLS regular season runs through Decision Day on November 7, and the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs don’t begin until the Wild Card matches on November 18. Tonight still matters, especially for Cincinnati.
What happened last time out
Messi’s weekend went: trophy, flight, bench.
He was in Oviedo, Spain, to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports on October 23. The Princess of Asturias Foundation announced him as the winner back on June 3, 2026, and he was the first individual football player to receive the honor.
The club was fully on board with the trip. Inter Miami head coach Cristian “Kily” González confirmed to ESPN that Messi would travel to Spain for the award and then rejoin the team for the Red Bulls match.
“Yes, he does have this event [in Oviedo], and I love that he will assume it in this way,” González said, via ESPN. “The whole club agrees that he should be there because it is a terribly important award, not just for him but for his family.”
Messi sounded pretty happy to be there, too. “It’s been a long time since I last came to Spain, and being able to arrive and receive this affection again, the truth is it’s an immense happiness,” he said in Oviedo on October 22, according to ESPN.
Then came the bill. ESPN reported that Messi did not start Inter Miami’s October 24 match against the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, New Jersey, because of travel fatigue from the Spain trip. Miami lost 2-0. The 39-year-old came off the bench in the second half.
Jet lag is undefeated, apparently. Even against Messi.
What it means for South Florida
Here’s the good news for anyone already stressing about December: Inter Miami has clinched a playoff spot. The Herons sit third in the Eastern Conference with 55 points, so tonight isn’t about survival.
That’s a pretty comfortable spot for the defending champions. Inter Miami won the 2025 MLS Cup, the club’s first title, by beating Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the final on December 6, 2025. Banner-raising energy still applies.
For Miami, tonight is more about getting the rhythm back after a flat night in New Jersey and, if the reports hold, getting Messi back in the starting lineup with fresh legs.
Cincinnati is in a very different mood. The Knifey Lions (yes, that’s really their nickname) have not clinched a 2026 playoff berth and need results in their final three regular-season matches. So they’re not coming to town for the beach.
How to watch
The match streams exclusively on Apple TV through MLS Season Pass, according to Yahoo Sports and MLS Soccer. That means no flipping around the cable guide hoping to find it. If you aren’t subscribed yet, sort it out before kickoff, not during the anthem.
Going in person? Inter Miami’s home ground is Nu Stadium in Miami. Check the club’s official channels for kickoff time, parking and gate details before you head out.
What’s next
The biggest question stays open until lineups drop: does Messi actually start? Multiple outlets say yes, but the club hasn’t put it in writing. Watch for the official team sheet before kickoff.
After tonight, the countdown is on. The regular season wraps on Decision Day, November 7. Wild Card matches start November 18, Round One (best-of-three) runs November 20 through December 2, and MLS Cup is set for December 18.
Inter Miami already has its ticket to the postseason. Tonight is a chance to show the champs are rested, rolling and ready to defend the crown, and maybe to make Cincinnati’s road a little bumpier on the way out.
