The wait is over, Miami. Bam Adebayo is off the injury report and Giannis Antetokounmpo says he feels right at home as the Heat open their season tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Kaseya Center. The first real test for the Giannis-Bam pairing starts at the opening tip, and both stars sound ready.
The groin scare that wasn’t
Heat fans spent the end of preseason doing that nervous thing where you refresh your phone every 10 minutes. Adebayo missed the Heat’s final preseason games with right groin tightness, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Coach Erik Spoelstra said he was not “overly concerned,” and Adebayo said he expected to be ready for the opener.
Adebayo framed the time off as the training staff protecting him from his own competitive streak.
“Just play it smart. Obviously, I want to be out there. But it’s one of those things where they tried to save me from myself. Other than that, I should be ready to go Wednesday,” Adebayo said, as reported by the Miami Herald via Bolavip.
He came off the injury report on the eve of the opener, so the duo everyone has been talking about since summer will finally share the floor when it counts.
Giannis is settling in fast
If Antetokounmpo is homesick, he’s hiding it well. After practice, he ran through a list of everything he likes about his new situation.
“I feel good, I feel comfortable. Teammates, team, system, weather, city, fans, I feel good,” Antetokounmpo said, according to the Miami Herald via Yahoo Sports.
Yes, he mentioned the weather. Welcome to South Florida, big fella.
He also says the on-court connection is coming along. “I think our chemistry is where it should be,” he said, per the Miami Herald.
The preseason numbers back up the good vibes. The Herald reported that Antetokounmpo averaged 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game while shooting 73.1% from the field in three preseason appearances for Miami.
That arrival did not come cheap. ESPN reported that the Heat officially acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from the Milwaukee Bucks on July 6, 2026. Milwaukee got Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
That is a lot of familiar faces heading north. Antetokounmpo said a heartfelt goodbye of his own on the day the deal was done. “No matter where I am, Milwaukee will always be my city, my team, my family,” he wrote in a farewell post, according to ESPN.
Can Giannis and Bam silence the doubters?
The question hanging over this team is simple: how do two of the league’s most versatile big men share space without stepping on each other’s toes? Spoelstra isn’t sweating it.
“Bam will find a way,” Spoelstra said, according to the Sun Sentinel, calling Adebayo’s versatility “so vital.” He went further, suggesting this could be the season Adebayo finally gets his due. “This is a year that Bam can be recognized for everything he does at the highest winning level,” Spoelstra said.
On Antetokounmpo, the coach kept it short and pointed. “We brought him here for a reason. He’s here for a reason,” Spoelstra said, per the Sun Sentinel.
Spoelstra called seeing Giannis and Bam together for the first time at training camp “surreal,” according to the Miami Herald.
There’s a reason Miami wanted a new chapter. The Heat’s 2025-26 season ended at 43-39 with a play-in loss to the Charlotte Hornets, the Sun Sentinel reported. Nobody in this town wants a repeat of that.
What to know for tonight
Who: Minnesota Timberwolves at Miami Heat
Where: Kaseya Center, downtown Miami
When: Tonight, the season opener
Here’s a fun bit of trivia to bring to the arena: this is the first time the Heat and Timberwolves have ever met on opening night.
One game won’t settle whether this experiment works. But after a long summer of trade talk, a nervy end to preseason and plenty of outside skepticism, Heat fans finally get to see Giannis and Bam do it for real. Get there early, find your seat and soak in the start of something new.
