The Giannis era in Miami is still looking for its first W. The 0-2 Heat visit the Charlotte Hornets tonight, and all eyes are on the Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo frontcourt to finally put a number in the win column.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. ET at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, according to ESPN. Charlotte enters at 1-1.
A rough start to a very big summer
Heat fans spent the offseason dreaming. Miami acquired Antetokounmpo in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks on July 6, 2026, NBA.com reported, and this is his first season in a Heat uniform.
He’s not the only new face. According to ESPN, Miami’s key additions for 2026-27 include Antetokounmpo, Klay Thompson, Bobby Portis, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Nick Richards. The key departures, per ESPN, include Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, Kel’el Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr.
That’s a lot of turnover for a team that, according to NBA.com, went 43-39 in 2025-26, finished 10th in the East and was eliminated in the SoFi Play-In Tournament. The summer moves were meant to push Miami past that in-between territory. Two games in, the results haven’t followed yet.
Antetokounmpo’s regular-season debut with Miami didn’t go to plan. On October 21, the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Heat 131-106, ESPN reported. Anthony Edwards poured in 45 points, and LaMelo Ball added 21 in his Minnesota debut. Not exactly the welcome party Miami had in mind.
Antetokounmpo has been candid about the mood. “We were definitely shocked,” he said, according to Yahoo Sports and The Sporting News.
The Giannis-Bam question
This is the pairing everybody in South Florida wants to see click. Sports Illustrated reported that Adebayo is on the 2026-27 roster and paired in the frontcourt with Antetokounmpo.
On paper, it’s a big, versatile duo, the kind of frontcourt that can make opposing coaches lose a little sleep. But the paper version and the real version still need to meet. Tonight in Charlotte is another chance for the two to show what they look like when it all lines up.
The fit questions are fair. With so many new players arriving and several familiar ones gone, Miami is still sorting out who does what. Two games is a small sample, but nobody in Miami wants it to stretch to three.
Sports Illustrated reportedly has starting lineups out for tonight’s game. SoFla Guide hasn’t independently verified that report, so treat any lineup talk as unconfirmed until the ball goes up.
What it means for South Florida
Let’s keep perspective: it’s October. An 0-2 start isn’t a crisis, and the season is long.
Still, this team was built to win now. Bringing in a player of Antetokounmpo’s profile changes the expectations around the franchise. Fans who packed the summer with Giannis highlight reels want to see that excitement turn into wins. A road victory in Charlotte would go a long way toward calming the group chats from Kendall to Kendall Lakes.
For the Heat, the immediate goal is simple. Get the first one. Everything else, from chemistry to rotations to how the new pieces fit around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, gets a lot easier to talk about once the zero is gone.
What’s next
When: Tonight, October 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. ET, per ESPN.
Where: Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The matchup: Miami (0-2) at Charlotte (1-1).
The game had not been played as of this writing, so there’s no final score yet. Any score you see floating around before tip-off is not the real thing.
If the Heat get this one, the conversation shifts from “what’s wrong?” to “here we go.” If they don’t, expect the questions about the new-look roster to get a lot louder. Either way, the Giannis-Bam experiment gets another real test tonight, and South Florida will be watching.
