The 561 area code covers Palm Beach County, Florida, from Boca Raton in the south to Jupiter and Tequesta in the north, and west across the sugar fields to Belle Glade on Lake Okeechobee. It runs on Eastern Time, sits inside country code +1, and shares its territory with the newer 728 overlay. If a number starts with 561, the line was issued somewhere in Palm Beach County, though the caller could be anywhere by now.

Palm Beach County is the northern third of South Florida’s urban coast. Drive north out of Broward County on I-95 and the moment you cross the county line at Boca Raton, you are in the 561. Keep going past Jupiter and over the Loxahatchee River into Martin County and the code flips to 772.

The county is big. It stretches about 45 miles along the Atlantic and roughly 50 miles inland to Lake Okeechobee, which makes it larger in land area than Rhode Island. Nearly all of that is one area code. The 2020 Census counted 1,492,191 residents in the county, and every one of their landlines and locally issued cell numbers starts with 561 or 728.

West Palm Beach is the county seat and the business hub, with the county government complex on North Olive Avenue downtown and the main courthouse a block away on North Dixie Highway. But the 561 is not a West Palm Beach code the way 305 is a Miami code. Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Jupiter and Wellington each have populations above 60,000 and their own identities, and all of them dial 561.

561 area code quick facts and dialing

Here is the reference card version. Everything below it expands on these points.

Largest city West Palm Beach (county seat)
Time zone Eastern Time (UTC-5 standard, UTC-4 daylight)

Toll-free? No, 561 is a geographic code

Because 728 overlays 561 rather than replacing it, you cannot dial seven digits anywhere in Palm Beach County. Your phone needs all ten, even when you call the neighbor next door. Nobody had to change an existing 561 number when 728 arrived, so the two codes live side by side and will for decades.

Cities and communities in the 561

Palm Beach County has 39 municipalities plus a large unincorporated population, so the list of places that use the 561 phone code is long. The table shows the biggest cities with 2020 Census figures. Confirm current estimates with the Census Bureau or the county’s planning division, since the fast-growing western communities move quickly.

City or town Population (2020 Census) Where in the county
West Palm Beach 117,415 Central coast, county seat
Boca Raton 97,422 South, on the Broward line
Boynton Beach 80,380 South-central coast
Delray Beach 66,846 South coast
Wellington 61,637 Central, inland
Jupiter 61,047 North coast
Palm Beach Gardens 59,182 North-central
Greenacres 43,990 Central, inland
Lake Worth Beach 42,219 Central coast
Royal Palm Beach 38,932 Central, inland
Riviera Beach 37,604 Central coast, Port of Palm Beach

Coastal cities from Boca to Jupiter

Running north on US-1 or A1A, the coastal strip goes Boca Raton, Highland Beach, Delray Beach, Gulf Stream, Boynton Beach, Ocean Ridge, Manalapan, Lantana, Lake Worth Beach, the town of Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach, Palm Beach Shores, Juno Beach, Jupiter, Jupiter Inlet Colony and Tequesta. Every one of these dials 561.

The town of Palm Beach, on the barrier island across the Intracoastal from West Palm Beach, is the one people confuse with the county. It is a separate municipality with its own town hall and police, and Worth Avenue and Mar-a-Lago sit there, not in West Palm Beach. Phone-wise there is no difference. Both are 561.

Western communities and the Glades

Inland, the big residential communities are Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee, The Acreage, Greenacres and Palm Springs (the Florida village, not the California city, which trips up callers constantly). These areas boomed after 2000 and absorbed a large share of the newer numbers, which is part of why the 561 ran short and needed the 728 overlay.

Farther west, past 20 Mile Bend on State Road 80, the sugar towns of Belle Glade, South Bay and Pahokee sit on the southeast shore of Lake Okeechobee. They are an hour’s drive from the beach but still in Palm Beach County and still 561. Cross the lake’s shoreline into Hendry or Glades County and you are into 863 territory.

Since the 2002 split, the answer is one county: Palm Beach. Area code boundaries follow telephone exchange boundaries rather than county lines, so a handful of addresses right at the edges can land in a neighboring code, but for practical purposes Palm Beach County and the 561 are the same map.

That was not always true. When 561 launched in 1996, carved out of 407 as Orlando and the Treasure Coast ran out of numbers, it covered Palm Beach, Martin, Indian River and St. Lucie counties, along with Okeechobee County. Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce and Vero Beach were all 561 numbers for six years. In 2002 those four counties moved to 772. If you have an old business card or a church directory from the late 1990s listing a 561 number in Stuart or Vero Beach, dial it as 772 and it will usually still connect.

The county line matters for more than phones. A Boca Raton address is in Palm Beach County, so its court records live with the Palm Beach County Clerk, not the “broward county clerk of courts” a few miles south in Deerfield Beach. Checking the area code is a quick sanity test when you are not sure which county a business or a person falls under.

Is 561 a country code?

No. Searches for “561 country code” and “country code 561” come up constantly, and the answer is the same every time: 561 is a United States area code, and the country code for the United States is +1.

No nation uses +561 either. International country codes are one to three digits, and the +56 block belongs to Chile, so a number written as +561 is almost always a Palm Beach County number that lost its leading 1. Written correctly for an international caller it looks like +1 561 555 0123.

If you receive a text or WhatsApp request from a “+561” contact claiming to be a foreign bank, embassy or lottery, that mismatch alone tells you it is not what it claims to be.

How to dial to and from a 561 number

Palm Beach County has been on full 10-digit dialing since the 728 overlay, so forget the old seven-digit habit.

Calling from Dial Example
Inside 561 or 728 10 digits 561 555 0123
Elsewhere in the U.S. or Canada 1 + 10 digits 1 561 555 0123
A cell phone anywhere in the U.S. 10 digits works 561 555 0123
Overseas Your exit code + 1 + 10 digits +1 561 555 0123
Inside 561 to another country 011 + country code + number 011 44 20 … (UK)
Inside 561 to Canada, Caribbean +1 countries 1 + area code + number 1 876 … (Jamaica)

Quick steps: dial a 561 number from abroad

  1. Dial your country’s international exit code (00 in most of Europe, or use + on a mobile).
  2. Dial 1, the North American country code.
  3. Dial 561.
  4. Dial the remaining seven digits.
  5. Check the time: Palm Beach County is five hours behind London in winter, four in summer.

Two local wrinkles. First, calls between 561 and the Treasure Coast’s 772 or Broward’s 954 are not long distance on any cell plan, and most landline plans treat them as local too, but a few legacy business lines still bill them as toll calls. Second, the Caribbean countries inside the +1 system (Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and others) dial like U.S. area codes but bill as international. Plenty of Palm Beach County families with Bahamas connections learn this the hard way on a first bill.

Good to know

A number that looks domestic, such as 1 876 or 1 809, may be an international call to Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. Check your plan’s international rates before returning a missed call from one of those codes.

Nearby and related area codes

South Florida’s phone map is a stack of coastal counties, each with its own code and most with an overlay.

Area code Where Relationship to 561
728 Palm Beach County Overlay, same territory as 561
954 and 754 Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Deerfield Beach) Directly south
305, 786 and 645 Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys South of Broward
772 Treasure Coast (Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee) Directly north, split from 561 in 2002
863 Inland: Hendry, Glades, Highlands, Polk West, across Lake Okeechobee
239 Southwest coast (Naples, Fort Myers) West across the Everglades
407 and 689 Orlando area 561’s parent code before 1996

The practical reading: a 954 caller is probably in Fort Lauderdale or the western Broward suburbs, a 772 caller is likely in Port St. Lucie or Stuart, and 305 or 786 points at Miami-Dade. If you are new to the region, that mental map helps you judge whether a contractor, a landlord or a date is really as close as they say.

Who is calling from 561: spam, spoofing and blocking

A 561 number on your caller ID means one of three things. The caller has a Palm Beach County number and is probably local. The caller got a 561 number years ago and moved, since numbers travel with people now. Or the caller is a robocaller spoofing a 561 number so you will pick up.

The third option is common. “Neighbor spoofing” software picks an area code and prefix close to yours, so Palm Beach County residents see a flood of fake 561 calls, and people with old 561 numbers in other states see them too. The county’s large retiree population makes it a favorite for Medicare, Social Security and “your grandson is in jail” scams.

Quick steps: handle a suspicious 561 call

  1. Let unknown 561 numbers go to voicemail. Real callers leave messages.
  2. Turn on your carrier’s free filter: AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter or T-Mobile Scam Shield.
  3. Enable Silence Unknown Callers on iPhone or Caller ID and spam protection on Android.
  4. Never call back a missed one-ring call from a number you do not recognize.
  5. Report scam calls to the FTC at its ReportFraud site and register at the national Do Not Call list.
  6. If a caller claims to be a government office, hang up and call that office on the number from its official website.

The carrier apps work because of STIR/SHAKEN, the caller-ID authentication standard the FCC required large carriers to adopt. It cannot stop every spoofed call, but it lets your carrier flag calls whose displayed number does not match the network they came from, which is exactly what spoofed 561 numbers look like.

Good to know

No Palm Beach County office, the Sheriff’s Office, Florida Power and Light, the IRS or Medicare will call you demanding payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency. A 561 caller asking for any of those is a scammer, however local the number looks.

One local pattern worth knowing: the county’s utilities, the Tax Collector and the Clerk all publish their real phone numbers on their own sites. Jury-duty scams in particular hit Palm Beach County every year, with a fake “deputy” claiming you missed jury service and owe a fine. The real Clerk’s office sends jury summonses by mail and does not take fines by phone.

561 area code prefix and carrier lookup

The three digits after the area code are the prefix, formally the NXX or central office code. In the landline era each prefix belonged to one exchange, so a 561 prefix told you both the carrier and the neighborhood. Boca Raton, Delray, Lake Worth and the Glades each had their own blocks, and old-timers could place a caller by the prefix alone.

That is now unreliable for two reasons. Number pooling splits each prefix into blocks of 1,000 that different carriers can hold. And local number portability lets you keep your number when you switch from AT&T to a cable company or to a cell carrier, so the original owner of a prefix is often not the current carrier of any given number.

You can still look up the original assignment. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator publishes the assigned codes by area, and free sites such as Local Calling Guide and the various “area code 561” lookup pages show the rate center (the exchange town, like Boca Raton or Belle Glade) and the carrier of record for each prefix. For the current carrier behind a specific number, you need a number portability lookup service, which the big reverse-lookup sites offer for a fee.

Local tip

Prefix lookups work better for judging a business than a person. A company whose main line sits in a West Palm Beach rate center probably has a real office there. An individual’s 561 cell number could have been issued in Boca Raton and now ring in Denver.

What a prefix lookup tells you is the rate center, and in Palm Beach County those rate centers are useful. Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, West Palm Beach, Jupiter and Belle Glade are the main ones, and they match how the county is actually organized: south county, central county, north county and the Glades. That is a finer grain than “Palm Beach County” and often enough to decide whether a tradesperson is in your part of the county.

How to get a 561 phone number

Businesses want a 561 area code because Palm Beach County customers trust local numbers and answer them. Residents want one because they moved here and are tired of explaining a Chicago area code. Both are easy, and you do not need a physical line.

Quick steps: get a 561 number

  1. Decide whether you need a mobile line, a landline or a virtual number for calls and texts.
  2. For a mobile line, ask AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or a prepaid brand for a Palm Beach County number at activation.
  3. For a virtual number, open an account with Google Voice, RingCentral, Grasshopper, OpenPhone or a similar provider.
  4. Search available numbers by area code 561 and pick one; many providers let you search for a memorable pattern.
  5. Expect some 728 numbers in the search results. Choose 561 specifically if the older code matters to you.
  6. If you already have a number you love, port it in. Carriers must release it under FCC rules.
  7. Confirm the monthly price and any porting fee on the provider’s current pricing page, since plans change often.

What you need

  • Government photo ID for a carrier account
  • A U.S. billing address (does not have to be in Palm Beach County for virtual numbers)
  • Your current account number and PIN if you are porting a number
  • A business name and EIN if you want the number listed under the company

Two things to watch. Most virtual providers now hand out 728 numbers in the same search as 561, and some customers do not notice until the business cards are printed. Filter for 561 specifically if you want the recognizable code. Also, true 561 inventory is finite, which is why the overlay exists, so the easy-to-remember 561 numbers tend to be gone. A good 728 number is better than a forgettable 561 one.

Store-wise, every big carrier has multiple locations in the county. The dense clusters are around Town Center at Boca Raton, the Mall at Wellington Green, The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens and Palm Beach Outlets in West Palm Beach. Check the carrier’s store locator for hours before you go, and bring the ID above.

When to get help

If a carrier refuses to port your number out or quotes an early termination charge you do not recognize, file a complaint with the FCC’s Consumer Complaint Center. For billing disputes with a Florida landline provider, the Florida Public Service Commission takes complaints by phone and online. For a stolen or hijacked number, call your carrier’s fraud line immediately and add a port-out PIN to the account.

Getting around the 561: airports, trains and the port

Because the 561 and Palm Beach County are one and the same, a few transport facts help if you are visiting or relocating.

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is on Belvedere Road just west of I-95 in West Palm Beach, about 10 minutes from downtown. It is smaller and calmer than “miami international airport” 70 miles south, and for most of the county it is the easier flight. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is the usual second choice for Boca and Delray residents.

Brightline, the private intercity train, stops at West Palm Beach downtown and at Boca Raton next to the downtown library, with service south to Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami and north to Orlando. Tri-Rail, the commuter line, has six 561 stations: Mangonia Park, West Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton, running south to the Miami Airport station. Palm Tran runs the county buses; routes 1 and 2 cover the US-1 and Congress Avenue corridors and are the ones visitors use most. Confirm schedules and fares on each operator’s site, since both rail lines adjust timetables several times a year.

The Port of Palm Beach sits in Riviera Beach at the end of Blue Heron Boulevard. It is a working cargo port with a cruise terminal, mainly short Bahamas sailings, and it is the reason Riviera Beach has a surprising amount of truck traffic for a beach town.

Main roads to know: I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike run north-south the length of the county. Southern Boulevard (US-98/SR 80) is the route west to Wellington and on to Belle Glade. A1A follows the barrier islands. Okeechobee Boulevard, Glades Road, Atlantic Avenue and Indiantown Road are the east-west arteries for West Palm, Boca, Delray and Jupiter respectively.

Common problems with 561 numbers

Problem Why it happens What to do
Call fails with a recorded message about dialing You dialed seven digits Redial with 561 or 728 in front
Number shows as 728, not 561 Overlay numbers issued since the change Both work identically; nothing to fix
Old 561 number in Stuart or Vero Beach does not connect Those counties moved to 772 in 2002 Replace 561 with 772
“+561” contact from overseas looks like a country code Missing leading 1 Save it as +1 561
Flood of spam calls from 561 prefixes Neighbor spoofing Carrier filter, silence unknown callers, report to FTC
Reverse lookup shows wrong carrier Number was ported Use a portability lookup, or just ask the person
Cell plan charges for a 1 876 or 1 242 call Caribbean +1 countries are international Check rates before calling back
Jury-duty or warrant call demanding payment Scam targeting the county’s retirees Hang up, call the Clerk or Sheriff on their published number

What a 561 number does and does not tell you

It tells you the number was issued in Palm Beach County at some point. It does not tell you where the phone is today, whether the carrier is the original one, or whether the caller is legitimate. For businesses, treat it as a mild positive signal and verify with an address. For unknown personal calls, treat it like any other number: voicemail first, then decide.

For residents it mostly tells you the rhythm of local life. You dial ten digits, your neighbors with 728 numbers are just as local as you are, and anyone asking for a gift card from a “county office” with a 561 number is lying. Everything else, from hours at the Tax Collector to Palm Tran fares, changes often enough that the county’s own site and the operator’s site are the places to confirm before you go.

FAQ

What city is the 561 area code?

No single city. The 561 area code covers all of Palm Beach County, Florida. West Palm Beach is the largest city and county seat, but Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Jupiter, Wellington and Palm Beach Gardens all use 561 too.

Is 561 a Florida area code?

Yes. The 561 phone area code is in southeast Florida, covering Palm Beach County between Broward County (954/754) to the south and the Treasure Coast (772) to the north.

What time zone is area code 561 in?

Eastern Time. Palm Beach County observes daylight saving time, so it is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 from March to November, matching New York and Miami.

Is 561 a country code?

No. 561 is a U.S. area code, and the country code for the United States is +1. Dial a 561 number from overseas as +1 561 followed by the seven-digit number. No country uses +561.

What is the 728 area code?

728 is an overlay for 561. It covers the same territory, Palm Beach County, and was added because 561 was running out of numbers. A 728 number is just as local as a 561 number, and the overlay is why every call in the county requires ten digits.

Do I have to dial 1 before a 561 number?

Within Palm Beach County, no; dial the ten digits. From elsewhere in the United States on a landline, dial 1 then the ten digits. Cell phones generally accept either format.

Which counties are in the 561 area code?

Only Palm Beach County. Before 2002, 561 also included Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties, which now use 772.

Why do I get so many spam calls from 561?

Robocallers spoof local-looking numbers so people pick up, and Palm Beach County’s large retiree population makes 561 a frequent target for Medicare and Social Security scams. Turn on your carrier’s free spam filter, let unknown calls go to voicemail, and report scam calls to the FTC.

Can I get a 561 number if I do not live in Florida?

Yes. Virtual number providers such as Google Voice, RingCentral and OpenPhone let you choose a 561 or 728 number from anywhere in the country. Mobile carriers can also assign a Palm Beach County number at activation if you ask.

How far is the 561 area code from Miami?

West Palm Beach is about 70 miles north of downtown Miami, roughly 75 to 90 minutes on I-95 outside rush hour. Boca Raton, at the southern end of the 561, is about 45 miles from Miami.
